Devey Family Christmas Party

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Wow I am behind!

So I obviously haven't posted the happenings of our lives of late. Ethan turned 3 on November 22nd. We did the traditional thing of going to Chuck-E-Cheese. He loves that place. Since he doesn't really like cake, I made cupcakes instead. He also doesn't like frosting, hence the small amount on his cupcake. This also happened to be the exact day of the BYU-Utah game and of course the entire Devey family had to participate in some fashion. Since Trent didn't have tickets to the game, he ended up going to a friends house to watch the game. Unfortunately, the entire population at that party were BYU fans. Trent was cheering all by himself. We also celebrated Trent's birthday and went to dinner. We also went to see Twilight, and YES it was by his own choice. He actually enjoyed the movie! The next day, he was left alone to do whatever he wanted. I took the kids and left the house until 6pm that night. He then went to a computer party for the rest of the night. We have slowly been preparing for Christmas with making bread and jelly for neighbors and wrapping presents. I will post again soon.

I finally did it!

I finally ran my first 5K on Thanksgiving morning. What a great day to run huh! I didn't feel the least bit guilty eating pie later! It was The Human Race in Draper and proceeds were donated to the Utah Food Bank and LDS Humanitarian Services. I ran with Kim, her dad, and her brother. We all ran together until mile marker 2, then I told Kim and Mike to go ahead of me. I thought I was going to die! Anyway, Kim and her dad were cheering me on at the finish line and yes I did cross the finish line. Believe it or not, I was not the last one! We did get rained on toward the end, but that was good incentive to run faster so we could finish and get dry!

Ethan's Surgery

Ethan had his tonsils and adenoids out yesterday. I pushed for the doctor to do them because of his breathing problems and eating problems. He had a hard time swallowing and breathing. She also clipped his tongue (frenulum) because he was tongue tied. We arrived at the hospital at 8am and checked in. They took us right back to the pre-op area. While there, we filled out paperwork and Ethan had his vitals taken. Then a Child Life Specialist came and played with Ethan. She gave him a "hospital buddy" that he could color on. When it was time to go, they wheeled him on his bed down to the OR. He didn't even cry like I thought he would. The surgery only took about 30 mintues. We waited in the hall and they wheeled him out of the PACU. He was screaming his head off. So they told me to get on the bed and hold him and they would wheel us up to Peds. He was pretty cranky coming out of anethesia. After about an hour of being on the peds floor, they gave him some Tylenol with codeine and he finally calmed down. The rest of the day was spent watching TV. In the evening, grandma and Liv came to visit and we went down to the playroom. When dad and Liv left, I asked Ethan if he felt better and he said "Yep", then asked if he could go play toys. So we went down to the playroom again. This time we decided to take stuff back to our room to play with. Ethan loved the big pirate ship. We stayed over night and came home this morning. They gave him a pancake to eat this morning and he just licked the butter off. He is doing pretty good as long as I keep him drugged!

Closure

We had my grandma's funeral on Friday the 7th. It turned out to be a wonderful service. We met at the funeral home and greeted people. Before they closed the casket, my grandma requested I read a little thing I wrote called "Memories of Grandma". My mom read a Irish blessing and then my sister talked a little about the memories she had. One thing she said that sums up my Grandma was that she was a grandma to everyone. She treated all of our friends and family like they were her own. Her friend of 60 years, Fran, got up and talked about how much she loved her and how much we will all miss her. At the cemetery, we had a bagpiper play and the Catholic priest bless the casket. I am so lucky to have such a great family and also such a great friend. My friend Christy helped me cope and get through the week. When she showed up at the funeral home, a feeling of peace came over me and I knew I was going to be okay. I sure will miss my Grandma, but know she is in a better place.

My Grandma

I said goodbye to my Grandma today for the last time. She passed away at about 5:45am this morning in her sleep in her own bed. I was so grateful she never had to go to a hospital or nursing home. She suffered from congestive heart failure, but was a trooper until the end. She was such a spunky lively woman who was the glue in our family. She went through losing two husbands as well as her own illnesses and still kept going and going. She enjoyed doing puzzles and socializing with her condo friends. I have so many great memories of my Grandma. I know she is in a better place now and no longer suffering. She was ready to go home. She was a true Irish girl. In her honor, we hung the Irish flag outside her condo today.

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Halloween and Such

We had an very typical Halloween. Liv had to dress up for school, so Christy did her hair really cute (Thanks!) and then we put some sparkles on and were off to school. She was the Snow Princess. While she was at school, I got Ethan dressed in his costume (pirate) and let him play around a bit. Then we picked her up from school and went straight to Trent's work to trick or treat around the office. It was fun to see everyone and their families. After that, we went to Jeanna's so we could see the girls in their costumes. Jeanna always has the BEST costumes each year! This year she was Amy Winehouse and it was fantastic!! After Jeanna's we went to my mom's and took pics. Ethan would never hold still enough to get a decent pic so all my pics of him are blurry. Then my mom took them to a few houses to Trick or Treat. By this time we were beat, so we went home. When we got home, the kids wanted to go around the neighborhood. So Trent braved the rain and took them around to a few houses. Then we came home and watched Ghost Hunters. The next day was of course a "Game Day" so the wives had to endure an evening of screaming kids and screaming husbands! We had a great time getting together and eating Mama Chu's though! Go Utes!!!

Eventful Day!

Today was full of adventure! We started our day by going to Ethan's Courage Reigns Class at 9am. He is so funny in that class; a natural cowboy. After his class we went to Costco and discovered they were having a safety fair. The kids got their picture taken with Smokey the Bear and climbed in all the fire trucks. Ethan was so mad when he had to get out. Then the kids had school pictures and that is always fun to get ready for. NOT! After school, we decided to go to Thanksgiving Point Farm Country. The kids saw all the farm animals and rode the horses. Then we walked over to the Farmers Market and had a strawberry lemonade. Liv got a free apple because she was so cute! Here are all the pics.

Over-Observant

So sometimes I think I am a little too observant. Many people complain of road rage, many people experience road rage (my husband included), and many people like me just enjoy the scenery. While driving down the road one day, through the construction, I noticed this sign and thought "Wait, that isn't right". Now every day I drive by this sign I laugh to myself or sometimes out loud because if you only crossed out one letter. . . how funny that would be!

Bittersweet

Today was officially the first day of Kindergarten for Liv. She was very excited to go. We got all dressed and got her backpack on. Then Ethan felt left out and thought he was going to school too. So we had to put his backpack on and take his picture. We had to go 15 minutes early so she wouldn't "be late for school". The kids all lined up outside the classroom door. Then it was time to say goodbye. I said "bye Liv have fun"! And she said "Ok bye Mom"! She didn't have any problem saying goodbye. Me, on the other hand, had serious issues. My baby girl no longer needed me. She was growing up right before my eyes. I made it to the car before I broke down into tears. Then I went to pick up Ethan from Christy's and cried my eyes out to her. I don't know why I am so emotional about her going to Kindergarten. I am excited for her to experience all the things I remember about school. I hope she loves it as much as I did! When we got home, Ethan went around the house calling for Liv. I told him Liv was at school and he said "Liv asleep?" and I said "no Liv is at school" I guess he didn't believe me because he went to check in her bedroom. When he didn't find her there, I guess the truth sank in.

Oh What Fun!

So this week I decided it was time to potty train Ethan. Little did I know how easy it would be! Liv was so hard to even get to sit on the potty let alone allow pee to come out. She actually got a UTI from this. Anyway, I put "big boy choo choo panties" on and we sat in the bathroom for about 20 minutes. I decided I had better check on Liv so I went out on the deck and he followed me. Then the next thing I know he goes running in the bathroom and went pee in his potty by himself! The next time he had to go, he went running in the bathroom and went pee by himself. He did, however, forget to pull his underwear down. Oh well, the idea was right! The next time he decided he wanted to pee in the big potty. We had bought one of the seats you can put on the big potty. I had a feeling these weren't REALLY made for boys even though they say they are. He actually DID go pee, but none of it went in the toilet. These seats are dumb. There is not a guard tall enough, if you know what I mean. This was all yesterday. So today he is 3 for 3! He had one poo attempt but he said it was "stuck". When his pee started coming out, he said "it's working mom it's working"! I laughed so hard! Everyone always told me how hard boys were to potty train, but I am actually enjoying it!
